We should have called this Nashville Hot-ish (and a little sweet) chicken… but it wouldn’t fit on the label. Bring on tasty Southern charm with this blend of cane sugar, salt, chili powder, paprika, garlic, onion and cayenne. We tip our hats to the Tennessee chicken that inspired this gotta-have-it blend.

Keep this versatile spice blend on the kitchen counter or pro pantry shelf to add a slightly sweet, little kick to any savory dish you’re making.

Good on:

  • Seafood,
  • Beef,

Four words. Nashville. Hot. Chicken. Dip. There’s a reason this has been in our top 10 recipes 3 years in a row. It’s delicious.

Chef Tony Reed gets after it on the grill with this Nashville Hot Chicken Grilled Wedge Caesar Salad.

**Nashville Hot Chicken - The myth, the legend, that classic Nashville flavor. **

While there is some debate as to which chicken shack came first, according to Nashville lore, Nashville hot chicken was invented out of a need for revenge. We’ll spare you the sordid details, but basically in the 1930’s, Thornton Prince’s girlfriend wanted to punish Thornton for his indiscretions. How? By “ruining” his favorite food (fried chicken) and his taste buds by adding some hellacious heat. Hilariously her plan backfired and Mr. Prince shared this spicier chicken with his friends who also loved the fiery bird.

Gotta have it.

Prince and his brother’s went on to open Prince’s Chicken Shack that, almost a century later, is still a staple of Nashville’s culinary scene. But the Nashville hot chicken trend really didn’t take off outside of the city until 2007.

**The first Hot Chicken festival. **

Mayor Purcell was looking for a way to celebrate Nashville’s approaching bicentennial when he had a bright idea.

“Hot chicken is truly our indigenous food,” he said. “It seemed a way to convene the city around something special to us, worth celebrating but also allowed everybody to participate.”

The festival was quite popular and introduced both locals and visitors to the dish causing an explosion in new hot-chicken restaurants, including the now world-famous Hattie B’s.

Today, you’ll find Nashville hot chicken on the menus of restaurants around the globe.

**Balanced sweet meets heat. **

So what is it about Nashville hot chicken that’s so addicting? We’d say it’s the balanced heat and classic flavors found in Nashville hot chicken seasoning. And, Spiceology’s Nashville Hot Chicken is a balanced twist on an old classic. Crafted with quality cane sugar, premium spices, including paprika, garlic powder and onion powder, and just the right amount of cayenne our Nashville Hot Chicken blend is the perfect amount of pleasurable heat. That’s right, there are levels of hot when it comes to this fiery bird and our blend is darn right approachable. So, if you are a hot-as-hell-heatseeker you might want to add some extra cayenne.
